Sunkoshi River Expedition with Himalayan Outdoor Project (HOP) is your gateway to one of the world’s most legendary white-water journeys a river so powerful and revered it is known as the “River of Gold.” Flowing from the high Tibetan plateau through remote Himalayan valleys before joining the mighty Koshi River, the Sunkoshi offers over 270 kilometers of ever-changing rapids, deep gorges, and untouched wilderness. Whether you’re a first-time rafter or a seasoned paddler, Sunkoshi River Expedition is designed to be accessible. Founded by Anup Gurung a world-class kayaker, IRF instructor, solo paraglider, and enduro rider who has conquered extreme environments across the globe and Rajiv Chand, a retired Major from the Nepali Army Special Forces with over 20 years of leadership and expedition experience, HOP was built on a powerful belief: “We don’t just take people down rivers we help them discover who they are in the flow.” Sunkoshi is more than a rafting trip; it’s a purpose-driven adventure that empowers local communities and preserves Nepal’s pristine wilderness. Sunkoshi River Expedition has never been more within reach.
Sunkoshi River Expedition follows a journey steeped in history and natural wonder. The first successful descent of the Sunkoshi was made in late September 1970 by Daniel C. Taylor, Terry Bech, Cheri Bremer-Kamp, and Carl Schiffler. Since then, the Sunkoshi has been ranked by National Geographic Adventure as one of the “Top 10 River Journeys in the World”. Sunkoshi offers a unique blend of adrenaline and cultural immersion the journey passes through remote ethnic villages, ancient temples, and lush subtropical forests teeming with wildlife, including monkeys, kingfishers, and even gharial crocodiles. Sunkoshi River Expedition with HOP combines big water, long wave trains, and open valleys with quiet evenings on golden beaches and a deep sense of what rafting in Nepal truly means. The river twists through narrow gorges and forested hills, revealing stunning panoramas at every bend. Sunkoshi is a journey that will stay with you forever.
A moderate level of physical fitness is beneficial for the Sunkoshi River Expedition, but HOP’s 4E Principle Education, Experience, Expertise, Excellence ensures that even those with no prior rafting experience can participate confidently. The river features rapids ranging from Class III to V, including legendary named rapids like Punch & Judy, Black Hole, Big Dipper, High Anxiety, Meat Grinder, Rhino Rock, and Dead Man Eddy. But with HOP’s expert guides providing comprehensive pre-trip training from paddle techniques to safety protocols Sunkoshi River Expedition is an achievable goal for anyone with determination and a sense of adventure. The best seasons for Sunkoshi are post-monsoon (September to December) and pre-monsoon (March to May), when water levels are ideal for rafting.
