Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu Circuit: The Experience, Not Just the Route

Both treks loop around a major Himalayan massif. Both cross a high pass above 5,000 meters, in the kind of cold, early-morning conditions that stay with you long after the trip ends. But the two routes ask for very different things from the people who walk them, and each one rewards you in its own way. Here's what actually happens out there, on both.

01Annapurna Circuit: Nepal's Original Classic

Annapurna Circuit Trek — high alpine desert near Manang, Nepal
The Annapurna Circuit subtropical valleys to high alpine desert in one continuous walk

There's a reason the Annapurna Circuit has been a rite of passage for Himalayan trekkers for decades the route delivers an almost unreasonable amount of variety for a single trek. You start in subtropical lower valleys, thick with terraced farmland and river crossings, and end up in high alpine desert on the Manang side, a landscape that looks more like Tibet than Nepal. Few treks anywhere pack that much visual range into one continuous walk.

The infrastructure matches the trail's long history. Teahouses appear reliably, meals are consistent, and the route is well enough marked that the logistics rarely become the story. What that means in practice: more of your attention goes to the trek itself the villages, the changing terrain, the culture along the way and less to logistics or uncertainty.

Then comes Thorong La. At 5,416m, the pass crossing is a genuine test a pre-dawn start in serious cold, a long, exposed climb, and a descent that tests tired legs as much as the ascent tested your lungs. Trekkers who've done it tend to describe the same thing: the physical grind of the morning fading almost immediately once you're standing at the top, prayer flags snapping in the wind, with the Annapurna massif spread out in every direction.

"Why it's worth it: few treks anywhere combine this much terrain variety, cultural richness, and a genuinely earned high-altitude crossing, all supported by infrastructure solid enough that you can actually be present for it rather than just surviving it."

02Manaslu Circuit: The Trek That Feels Like a Discovery

Manaslu Circuit Trek — restricted-area route through rural Nepal
The Manaslu Circuit a restricted-area route with far less trekking traffic

Manaslu asks something different of you before you even start walking a restricted-area permit and a mandatory licensed guide, simply because this route hasn't been opened to the same volume of independent trekking as Annapurna. That single requirement changes the character of the entire trek.

Villages along the way feel less shaped by decades of tourism traffic. Teahouses are present, but more basic in places, which means the trek asks a bit more of you logistically and gives back a version of rural Nepal that feels closer to how it's actually lived, rather than how it's been arranged for visitors. Trekkers who've already done Annapurna or Everest Base Camp and come to Manaslu often describe the same sensation: the quiet feeling of walking somewhere that hasn't fully caught up to being a "destination" yet.

The high point, Larkya La at 5,160m, asks for the same kind of early, cold, committed crossing as Thorong La long and demanding, with a descent that stretches the legs on the far side. What's different is the atmosphere around it: fewer trekkers on the trail that morning, a stiller kind of solitude at the top, and a summit-day experience that feels more personal simply because there are fewer people sharing it with you.

"Why it's worth it: if you've already experienced a well-supported circuit trek and are craving something that feels less finished, less discovered, Manaslu delivers that in a way that's becoming harder to find in Nepal's more established regions."

03Getting Ready for Altitude, Either Way

Both passes sit well above the altitude where correct pacing matters more than fitness see our guide on altitude sickness for what that actually involves in practice. Whichever circuit you choose, the days leading up to the pass crossing are where the trip is genuinely made or unmade, and a well-paced itinerary matters more than raw physical preparation.

04If Even Manaslu Feels Too Familiar

For trekkers who've done both circuits and want the "quieter alternative" logic taken further, the API Basecamp Trek in Nepal's far west moves into a region with essentially no established trekking tourism at all the natural next step once Manaslu itself starts to feel like a known quantity.
