The Wild West - Karnali

The Last Free-Flowing RIVER

The Last Free-Flowing Giant of the Himalayas

When people talk about the wild side of Nepal, they’re really talking about Karnali – the country’s longest, mightiest, and most soulful river. This is the ultimate expedition for paddlers who want it all: remote wilderness, world-class whitewater, laughter, campfires, monkeys, and a big slice of Nepali heart.

Itinerary

MAP 1

Day 0

Kathmandu Arrival & Meet the Madness
Touch down in Kathmandu, where chaos has its own rhythm and charm. Settle in, shake off the travel dust, and join our pre-departure meeting in the evening. We’ll go over gear checks, permits, and last-minute essentials so nothing gets left behind, except maybe your comfort zone. Can’t make it in person? No worries! you can join online to make sure you haven’t missed anything important. Meet your teammates, share some laughs, and get a taste of Nepal’s legendary hospitality. Sleep easy, the adventure kicks off tomorrow.

Day 1

Road to Surkhet: The Long Haul to the Wild
Early breakfast and off we go! It’s a full-day drive to Surkhet, the gateway to the Karnali. Expect winding mountain roads, long flat land highway, and random goats photobombing your selfies. Trust the process! Every bump brings us closer to river bliss.

Day 2

Off-Road to the River Put-In
Today, we leave the highway and dive into the unknown. The drive to the put-in is an off-road adventure through villages, forests, and valleys few outsiders ever see. By afternoon, we reach the banks of the Karnali — our home for the next week. Campfire, dinner, and starry skies set the tone.

Day 3

First Paddle Strokes on the Karnali
Welcome to the Karnali! After a thorough safety briefing (yes, you’ll actually listen this time), we launch into one of Nepal’s most iconic rivers. The first day warms us up with class III rapids, perfect for syncing with your paddle and your crew. Campfire, food, stars. Life simplified.

Day 4

Whitewater Wonderland
The Karnali wakes up! Bigger water, faster flow, and constant grins all around. It’s one of those days that keeps you sharp and smiling, where teamwork and timing make all the difference. Every rapid ends in high-fives, hoots, and disbelief at how much fun a river can be. By campfire time, you’ll be sun-tired, river-buzzed, and completely hooked.

Day 5

Chill Flow & Riverside Reset
Today, we take it slow. We paddle until lunch, then drop anchor on a golden riverside beach for a well-earned break. Afternoon plans? Up to you — wander to a nearby village, read a book, build a sandcastle masterpiece, or finally take that luxury bucket shower. This is the pause before the storm — because tomorrow, we enter the heart of the Karnali.

Day 6

The Heart of the Canyon
Now we’re talking. The river narrows, cliffs rise, and the world turns wild again. Big water, deep gorges, and moments of pure flow that make you forget everything else. By evening, campfires glow beneath towering canyon walls — laughter, music, and that unspoken “we did it” look all around.

Day 7

River Life Unplugged – Drift, Swim & Soak It In
The rapids mellow, and the vibe shifts. Now it’s all about drifting, floating, and soaking it all in. The river widens, the sounds soften, and hammocks appear like magic. Maybe this is where you decide it’s time to learn to kayak — your first strokes in calm water, your first roll, your first grin of “I get it.” Because here, on the Karnali, everyone becomes a student of the river.

Day 8

From Canyons to Plains
The jungle thins, and the horizon opens wide. We drift through flat plains, tall grasslands, and small villages, waving to kids along the banks. Life slowly reappears — fishermen, buffalo, temples, fields of mustard and rice. By late afternoon, the first signs of development appear — roads, houses, and phone signal (yep, that’s back too). It’s a beautiful transition from wilderness to the rhythm of human life again. We end the day with warm showers, cold drinks, and that strange feeling of being both changed and recharged.

Day 9

From Wild to Worldly
Our final morning on the river — a few peaceful hours of paddling before we glide under the iconic Chisapani Bridge, the legendary finish line of the Karnali. We pull the rafts ashore, celebrate, and take a deep breath — we made it. From here, the choice is yours: Drive back toward Kathmandu with the crew, soaking in one last Nepali road adventure. Fly from Nepalgunj, catching the Himalayas from above as the river winds below. Stay a night at Bardiya National Park, swapping rapids for rhinos and roaring waves for Bengal tigers and catch the sunset flight and reunite with the team in Kathmandu for the farewell party.

Day 10

Return to Kathmandu & Farewell Toast
Arrive back in Kathmandu, now somehow both familiar and brand-new. Head to one of our favorite partner spas — not included, but offered at a special HOP-family rate. Take a nap, get a massage, let the city hum fade into background. Then freshen up for the final evening toast — to the river that made us family and stole our hearts. It’s not goodbye… just see you next flow.

Things to Consider Before & During Your Time in Nepal

  • Roads are bumpy and unpredictable — patience is part of the adventure. Trust the journey (and your driver!).

  • Bring enough personal medications for the entire trip — pharmacies don’t exist in the middle of nowhere.

  • Internet is rare or non-existent in remote areas — disconnect and enjoy being truly off-grid.

  • Avoid drinking untreated water — bring purification tablets or use filtered water we provide.

  • Be cautious with street food and uncooked items — as tempting as it looks, it’s not worth spending your expedition battling food poisoning or diarrhea. Stick to cooked meals and bottled or boiled water.

  • Never overpack — it’s just going to be a burden for everyone, including you.

  • Leave footprints, not traces. Respect the rivers, mountains, and the people who live here.

  • Come with an open, respectful mindset toward local culture and traditions.

  • Facilities are minimal in remote regions — embrace simplicity and celebrate the wild instead of comfort.

  • Carry enough cash — ATMs and card payments can vanish as fast as the phone signal.

  • Keep your permits and documents handy — sometimes you’ll need to show them at checkpoints.

  • Stay calm when plans change — things don’t always go as scheduled, and that’s okay. Nepal has its own rhythm.

  • Enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Every detour and delay is part of the story.

  • Stick with your group — wandering off isn’t just unsafe, it’s unnecessary in landscapes this vast.

  • Switch off everything and tune in to the moment. This is why you came here.

  • Be mindful of altitude and hydration — drink plenty of water and take breaks when needed.

  • Tipping is not mandatory but always appreciated — your guides and crew will remember your generosity long after the trip.

  • Smile often — it’s the universal language here and opens more doors than words ever could.
